What Castle Rock requires when you finish a basement
Finishing a basement in Castle Rock takes a building permit from the Town1. A few of the Town's basement-finish rules that shape the layout and the budget:
- Floating walls. Because of expansive soils in Castle Rock, non-bearing walls built on the slab must allow 3 inches of movement at the top or bottom, unless an engineer's site-specific soils report says otherwise2.
- Room size and ceilings. Habitable rooms need at least 70 sq. ft., at least 7 feet in any direction, and a ceiling of at least 7 feet. Bathrooms and laundry rooms need at least 6'-8"2.
- Emergency egress. Every basement bedroom needs an emergency escape opening. Escape windows need a clear opening of at least 5.7 sq. ft. and a sill no higher than 44 inches2. See the full permit and egress rules.
- Alarms. When a basement is finished, the home must have smoke alarms throughout as required for new homes, and carbon monoxide alarms where the code calls for them2.
- Registered contractors. Contractors must be licensed and registered with the Town's Building Division to get a permit. You can check a contractor's registration in the Town's eTRAKiT portal1.
How it works
- Call (720) 918-0175 or send the short form above.
- Your call or request goes to an independent local basement contractor.
- The contractor talks through your project, visits if needed, and gives you a quote. You decide whether to hire them.
We are a referral service, not a contractor. The contractor sets the price and does the work.
What does it cost to finish a basement?
It depends on size, layout, finishes and whether you add a bathroom or egress window. As a national benchmark, the 2025 Cost vs Value Report puts the average basement remodel, a 20-by-30-foot entertaining area with a wet bar and full bathroom, at $52,0123,4.
